Players might want to downgrade Elden Ring to a previous patch to avoid playing with balance changes like certain nerfs, prevent getting a certain bug introduced in a new patch, do a challenge run in the previous state of the game, etc. Another reason is that with the new update of Shadow of the Erdtree, all mods will be incompatible until they are supported again. For any of these reasons, if you’d like to go back to the previous game version, here’s how to downpatch Elden Ring.

How to Downgrade Game Version in Elden Ring

Downgrading Elden Ring to a previous version is possible, but it’s important to consider a few things before proceeding:

  • Downgrading is only possible on PC (Steam version). Consoles have server-side updates, so you can’t choose specific versions in that case.
  • Downpatching involves some technical steps and can be risky if not done correctly. So, it’s best to avoid this if you’re not sure what to do if something goes wrong.
  • The most important thing to do is back up your save files before attempting a downgrade, as they might not be compatible with older versions. Find your Elden Ring save files (usually in %APPDATA%\EldenRing) and copy them to a safe location.
  • Back Up EasyAntiCheat: Copy the “EasyAntiCheat” folder from your Elden Ring directory.
  • Disable Automatic Updates: In Steam, right-click Elden Ring -> Properties -> Updates and disable automatic updates.

Follow these specific steps to downpatch Elden Ring to game version 1.10.1 to continue to use mods made before the update:

1) Go to %APPDATA%\EldenRing and make a backup of your ER0000.sl2 (vanilla) and ER0000.co2 (seamless) save files.

2) Go to your Elden Ring Game directory and make a backup of your “EasyAntiCheat” folder.

3) In Steam, right-click on Elden Ring >  Properties > Updates… and set the game to Only update this game when I launch it.

4) Go to your Steam Console by typing “steam://open/console” into a browser or run prompt.

5) Use the following 3 commands:
@AllowSkipGameUpdate 1
download_depot 1245620 1245624 4173907165901381087
download_depot 1245620 1245621 4586391483365949586

After this, wait for the downloads to complete. This will take a while, because you’re re-downloading Elden Ring.

6) Your downloaded files will be in Steam\steamapps\content\app_1245620\depot_1245624\ and Steam\steamapps\content\app_1245620\depot_1245621\

Move these files to your Elden Ring folder, overwriting the existing files.

7) If you get a corrupted save error, run the game through Mod Engine 2 once with all mods disabled to port your base game saves over. Then once again with only seamless co-op enabled to port your seamless co-op saves over to 1.10.1 (Unalloyed comes with an update_saves.bat script that will walk you through this).

To re-update, restore your backed up Easy Anti-cheat folder (and save data if desired) and then right-click Elden Ring in Steam. Go to Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game Files. Then launch the game from Steam to port your save data back and verify that the game works.
