Do I have to Beat Elden Ring to Play the DLC? Answered
Check out the DLC requirements and the fastest way to unlock the new content of Shadow of the Erdtree.
Elden Ring’s highly anticipated DLC “Shadow of the Erdtree” is out and if you’re planning to buy it, you might want to know if you have to beat Elden Ring to play it. Plus, if you’re nowhere near the end of the game and want to know the specific requirements to unlock the new content, here’s a guide for you.
Do I have to beat Elden Ring to Play the DLC?
No, you don’t have to beat Elden Ring completely to play Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, but to access the new content, you have to progress through the main game to a certain point.
There are specific story bosses you must defeat to unlock the DLC. Keep in mind that these bosses are considered late-game challenges, so be prepared for a tough fight.
Here are the Elden Ring DLC requirements:
- Beat Radahn.
- Beat Mohg at the Mohgwyn Palace.
When you complete these tasks, you can interact with the Cocoon of the Empyrean in Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum which will take you to the Land of Shadow, starting the DLC content.
While you will get the best possible experience if you complete the game before starting the DLC, it’s not mandatory. If you can’t wait to begin, create a plan of things to skip along the way and do only those tasks that are necessary to take you to Radahn and Mohg.
How long does it take to get to Mohg?
If you’ve recently started the game, and want to get to the point of starting the DLC, there are many factors to consider. The game is, of course, very challenging, and your build will make all the difference. You don’t want to face tough bosses while under-leveled.
However, there is a fast way to get to Mohn and players have done it in 1 to 2 hours. The objective is to progress through White Mask Varre’s questline. It’s the NPC you see at the beginning of the game, near The First Step Site of Grace in Limgrave.
What’s the Fastest Way to Reach Mohg in Elden Ring?
Here’s a breakdown of the earliest way to get to Mohg in Elden Ring:
After getting any of the Great Runes and talking to Enia at the Roundtable Hold, you can find White Mask Varré at Rose Church, which is in Liurnia.
When you see him the second time at this Church, you will get the Festering Bloody Finger.
Now, you must use the Fingers to complete 3 invasions. It’s not compulsory to defeat enemies-simply taking part in these invasions will do the trick. Then, go back to Varré.
After this, White Mask Varré will ask you to join the Lord of Blood, and you should accept. He will then give you the Lord of Blood’s Favor item. But there’s an additional request – to soak it in the blood of a maiden. For this, you can go to the Church of Inhibition. You can run away from an NPC invader along the way if you want to save time.
In the Church of Inhibition, interact with the statue and complete the mission to Dye cloth with maiden’s blood.
When you complete this objective and go back to Varré, he will give you the Pureblood Knight’s Medal. This is what will take you to Mohgwyn Palace and the fight against Mohg, the Lord of Blood.

After this, if you end up getting the ‘Inappropriate activity detected’ error or wish to downpatch Elden Ring if your mods are broken, here’s how to get it done.
