The GTA 5 city name is Los Santos (acronym L.S.). This is a major city located in southern San Andreas in Grand Theft Auto V and Online. This isn’t the first time it has made its appearance in the franchise – it was there in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004). But the city in the 2013 game is more detailed and bigger.

Is Los Santos based on a real city?

Yes, Los Santos is heavily influenced by Los Angeles, California. Fun fact – Los Santos is Spanish for “The Saints” which is a reference to “The Angels” – the translation of Los Angeles.

It isn’t just the name that’s similar, there are a lot of places and locations that exist in LA, that you will find in GTA V’s Los Santos. There’s the US Bank Tower in downtown LA, Sierra Towers, Beverly Hills City Hall, the Los Angeles Country Club, AMC Theater, and many more. You can check out the comparison video right here.

Rockstar’s team used Google Maps projections of Los Angeles to design Los Santos’s road networks and it’s evident with how true to life it is. This was the most technically demanding aspect of the game’s production, according to the team.

The devs haven’t just replicated the visuals, but have also breathed life into the locations. Fans of the game and franchise will feel nostalgic whenever they hear names like Vespucci Beach, the iconic Vinewood sign, and Downtown Los Santos.

Every location has its own identity indicated by the atmosphere, architecture, and culture. There’s so much to do in these places that as you lose yourself for hours in GTA 5, navigating will come naturally to you.

Soon, you’ll realize that famous landmarks like the Griffith Observatory-inspired Galileo Observatory, and the sprawling Los Santos International Airport become your playground. The devs have put in effort while designing this game because there are loads of Easter Eggs and hidden collectibles scattered all over Los Santos.
